In the first bubble chart, the x-axis displays performance year-to-date (%); the y-axis displays current price; and the bubble area represents the latest reported profit margins. Since Apple is priced so much higher than the rest, the next chart zooms in on the 9 lower-priced stocks. Interesting to note how Microsoft and Royal Bank of Canada have some of the highest profit margins but were basically flat performers in 2011, where as Intel performed much better.

In the next chart, the x-axis displays current P/E; the y-axis displays the current beta; and the bubble area represents the latest reported profit margins. This chart is skewed by Enbridge Energy Partners LP and Good Year Tire and Rubber Co., which both had high P/E’s but were at the extremes of volatility.

Zooming into the lower left quadrant gives us a better look at the cluster of stocks there, and we can see how Intel has comparable volatility to Microsoft, Royal Bank of Canada, and Apple.
