Three-Dimensional Bubble Charts Help Managers Make Better Decisions (October 29, 2013)

Wilmington, Delaware - Three-dimensional (3-D) bubble charts let managers compare projects and business investments against four different measures simultaneously, such as costs, risks, rewards, and resources. In 3-D bubble charts created using Bubble Chart Pro, projects are represented by bubbles floating in a three-dimensional space. By rotating the chart, managers can literally “look around” inside a 3-D bubble chart, and easily identify their best and least attractive business investment opportunities.

3-D bubble charts can be used to compare many different types of potential business investments, including R&D projects, marketing strategies, and new product development proposals. They are particularly useful in project portfolio management to help allocate capital, resources, and risk as can be seen in the video "The Most Important Chart in Project Portfolio Management."

In a 3-D bubble chart, projects are represented by bubbles floating in a three-dimensional rectangular space where data is represented by the location in the space and the size of the bubble. By dividing the space into sections, managers can determine at a glance which are their best projects and which are their worst projects. For example, the top, left, front section might contain the projects with the lowest costs, lowest risks, and highest rewards whereas the bottom, right, back section would contain the projects with the highest costs, highest risk, and lowest rewards.

3-D bubble charts are the newest feature in Bubble Chart Pro version 5 from Data Machines, Inc. Bubble Chart Pro is available in three editions: BASIC, PLUS, and OPTIMAL.

With Bubble Chart Pro BASIC, managers can create colorful bubble charts in as few as four clicks. They can modify and drill-down into the underlying data by directly interacting with the bubbles on the chart so they can quickly model different scenarios. In addition, the bubble charts are fully-customizable, so managers can get the look that they want.

Bubble Chart Pro PLUS adds a SMART prioritizer that assigns an objective value score for each project based on the business' strategy and goals. The SMART prioritizer is based on research by scientists from Harvard, MIT, and the University of Southern California. By combining multiple inputs into a single score, the SMART prioritizer makes project portfolio ranking much easier, robust, and defensible.

Bubble Chart Pro OPTIMAL adds a fast portfolio optimizer for finding the set of projects that will deliver the maximum value when the business doesn't have enough capital, resources, or risk tolerance to do all the projects. A project portfolio of only 30 projects has over 1 billion subsets of projects to choose from, so the Bubble Chart Pro™ portfolio optimizer makes finding the most valuable subset of projects that also meets the constraint limitations fast and easy.

“Managers can save money and reduce risk by using the new 3-D bubble charts to help select their best portfolio of business investments,” says George Huhn, developer of Bubble Chart Pro. “And they can get started today without needing to spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars for an enterprise project portfolio management tool. We have made project prioritization and portfolio optimization easy, affordable, and beautiful for business people looking to start using modern analytics in their decision-making.”

Bubble Chart Pro starts at only $149.97, and a free demonstration version can be downloaded from the website. All Bubble Chart Pro editions can be used in the latest Mac and Windows operating systems.
